TOKYO - Sono cinque i candidati che hanno presentato oggi il loro nome nella sfida per guidare il partito al potere e diventare premier del Giappone con l'ex ministro degli Esteri Taro Aso principale favorito che, se eletto, potrebbe decidere subito di sciogliere le camere e indire elezioni anticipate. Il partito dei Liberal democratici al potere spera che un dibattito su come rimediare all'attuale crisi economica e al pressante peso del debito pubblico accumulato dal Giappone possa migliorare la sua immagine nei confronti degli elettori in vista di una nuova tornata elettorale, che il prossimo primo ministro potrebbe convocare anche per novembre. Aso, carismatico leader famoso per la sua passione per i fumetti manga, è in testa ai sondaggi che lo danno per vincente nell'elezione per guidare il partito Liberal democratico, che si terrà il 22 settembre. "L'economia del Giappone ha bisogno di tre anni di cure. Io la ricostruirò in un breve periodo con metodi precisi", ha detto Aso, che ha 67 anni, esponendo il suo programma politico. "Abbiamo bisogno di riforme per il futuro e io le perseguirò con risolutezza". Altri candidati il ministro dell'Economia Kaoru Yosano, gli ex ministri della Difesa Yuriko Koike e Shigeru Ishiba e l'ex ministro dei Trasporti Nobuteru Ishihara.
